St Patrick's Links: Exceptional Modern Links Golf
St Patrick's Links has simplified the evolution of links-style golf courses.
Over the unblemished dunes above Sheephaven Bay in County Donegal, Tom Doak's design offers freedom, imagination, and strategic choice.
St Patrick's Links opened in 2021 and is the newest of the three courses at Rosapenna, and is the one that expresses the most. It is dramatic, yet balanced and fair, and offers a true sense of discovery from the first tee to the last green.
Let the Land Speak
Tom Doak, an award winning course designer, created St Patrick's Links at Rosapenna. The first of the three courses to be designed through the massive rolling dunes, sandy blowouts and natural contours. The result is a course that feels raw, open and exhilirating.
Instead of carving out holes in the land, Doak allows the dunes and sand to dictate the routing.
The result is a course that is timeless and modern.
You Can Choose Your Line
A St Patrick's Links standout course characteristic is the tee freedom.
Generally fewer restrictions placed on the player for how to tackle the holes on this course. You may take aggressive options to carry over the ridges, go for the alternate more conservative options to the cruising landing zones. Decisions intended to create more freedom instead of restrictions of lines.
The elements create opportunities for holes to take on new shapes. Holes previously seen as generous may become unfair. Conversely, holes previously seen as unfair.
Intuitive, imaginative play will be more advantageous than dogmatic play.
Angles.
All of the elements combine to create opportunities for play.
Evaporable simplicity.
The same holds true for the longer par fives as the shorter par fours.
The greens are exceptional.
The flow is natural, understated but clearly present. Putting will require touch and will be tested
The putt and touch have been paired. As a combination, however, the putt will require patience while the touch will be tested.
Playing from just off the greens gives you the opportunity to try different types of shots, like bump-and-run, and imaginative pitches. You can take the shots instead of playing safe to defend against a difficult lie.
Wind Changes Everything
Old Tom Morris Links teaches restraint, while Sandy Hills tests strength. St. Patrick's Links rewards adaptability.
Into the wind, it is a test of control and patience. With the wind, it becomes a test of creativity and boldness.
The course is a good balance of creativity and challenge while the course diverts the wind to keep each hole different.
The Experience Is Walking The Course
While the course uses large sand dunes to create remains walkable. There is a good flow to the course to keep you immersive during the round. Other course despite the large sand dunes flowing to each hole.
You are able to fully inhabit the sand dunes and landscape like few modern courses. You are able to fully walk the course and immerse yourself in the natural landscape of the course.
