Sandy Hills: Rosapenna's Big, Bold Statement
The Sandy Hills course at Rosapenna offers a completely unique experience compared to the nearby Old Tom Morris Links course.
Old Tom, it feels understated, while Sandy Hills feels expansive, muscular, and unapologetically modern. Playing it feels like a stepping into a more wild and demanding version of links golf. It a course defined by scale, elevation, and relentless exposure to the Atlantic elements.
Pat Ruddy Built Something Special
Opened in 2003 and designed by Pat Ruddy, Sandy Hills was built in a remarkable stretch of giant dunes at the edge of Sheephaven Bay.
From the very first tee shot, players experience a remarkable sense of space. Fairways tumble through enormous dunes, the sight lines stretch endlessly, and wind a factor. It is a constant presence.
Everything Moves Vertically
Sandy Hills is characterized by the amount of vertical movement.
Often, tee shots must plunge over dune ridges down into fairways that are otherwise neat. Following these shots, the approaches tend to be, demanding, and steep. the greens are both well protected and intimidating.
The land will nearly always be rising, falling, or twisting. This all makes distance control particularly difficult. Judging the shot's trajectory, especially when the wind is mid shot, becomes critical.
It Dares You to Attack
Sandy Hills, unlike Old Tom Morris Links, will always tempt players to be aggressive with their shots.
Tee boxes may have straight lines making them seem inviting, but swinging as hard as you can at the ball opens you up to potential crosswind dangers and difficult lies.
If done correctly, confidence can have positive outcomes.
All Types of Holes are In Play
Sandy Hills is an extension of its older sibling, and is more physically exhausting.
All of the Par 4s have their own distinct characteristics, and some are long enough that the approach shots require total headwind commitment.
The Par 5s are considered honest triple shot holes, regardless of the playing conditions; furthermore, your shot placement is crucial.
The Par 3s can be determined to be the best holes. Most of them are played through deep sand valleys which require strategic club selection, and a well done strike can be thwarted by winds.
The Bunkers
The Sandy Hills bunkers are large, expressive, and situated on the peaks and troughs of the sand hills. They are more contoured than those on Old Tom Morris Links and are just as difficult to hit accurately.
If you miss, you will be greatly punished; especially on the miss side of the bunkers, where the recovery shot can be unpredictable.
The Putting greens are fast and smooth. The player will encounter great difficulty in reading them due to the hills and minor ridges of the surrounding material. It is also important that the player is positioned above the hole; once the ball is below the hole, the player will encounter difficulty in keeping the ball below the hole. Placing the ball above the hole is essential. Shooting the ball below the hole will quickly become a defensive shot.
When the Wind Blows, Everything Changes
If teaching strategy is an art form, the Old Tom Morris Links has it mastered. If testing execution under pressure is the goal, Sandy Hills has the best test.
When the wind blows from the Atlantic Ocean, the course becomes dangerous. It becomes an extremely difficult challenge that requires the use of penetrating and low ball flight shots. Even then, success is not guaranteed.
Hitting shots to the closing holes can be mentally exhausting. Concentration can be tested repeatedly.
The Walk Is Part of the Test
The Sandy Hills course is a great walk. The course has great elevation change, a massive amount of walking from the green to the tee, and walking in the wind can really test your stamina.
The walk does have extremely valuable rewards. Playing the course gives a sense of isolation bringing the golfer to the purest sense of playing in the great outdoors as the course has great elevation change and a massive amount of walking from the green to the tee, and walking in the wind can really test your stamina.
Rosapenna's Powerhouse
Part of the beauty of Sandy Hills at Rosapenna is that it is a bold, modern links course that balances the Old Tom Morris Links.
While Old Tom Morris offers charm, subtlety, and history, Sandy Hills gives a course that offers a true stern test of skill.
These two sets of courses combine to offer an experience that is simply a must for links golf.
Sandy Hills is a course that is unforgettable for links purists that enjoy testing layout, wild terrain, and extreme conditions. This is a course that requires everything from the golfer and rewards the golfer with memories that will last for a long time.
This is uncompromising links golf. It's a challenge that some may find irritating, but I appreciated every single punishing second.
