Majestic Creek Golf: Stunning Itinerary - Expect More Failure

Majestic Creek is situated in the hills west of Hua Hin. It is simple and low key with no luxurious resort style short stays, and no championship course style golf on the beach. Majestic Creek is in a calm valley with countryside, rural farmland and more rural wooded areas and mountains that are more real than artificial.

It was a scorcher the day I played this course. There was no cover and everywhere I looked was burned grass. The fairways looked and felt like they were made from cement. The balls would roll more than they ever should. This was more like a desert style round of golf than what I would expect from a tropical Thai golf course, and it was clearly made that way from a lack of maintenance.

This course knows it is not as good as Black Mountain or Banyan. This course does not have the championship pretentious style. What it does offer is a great golf course with good flow designed around course geography that is fair to smart players and not just long bombers.

The Routing Works With the Land

The natural course in this valley system. Fairways extend between subtle ridges and gentle slopes. Some holes play on valley floors, some climb to high tees overlooking pineapple fields and hills covered in jungle.

They use elevation in a subtle but effective way. Tee shots usually feel generous and inviting, but approach shots become more challenging. Greens are elevated, angled, and protected by slopes and hazards. The routing doesn't create awkward transitions. Everything connects, making the course easy to walk.

Majestic Creek seems to take a horizon by contrast to more dramatic designs in Hua Hin. Rather than bold architectural moves, natural contours and strategic shaping are employed to create a cohesive, comfortable, and timeless design. One just wishes for better maintenance.

Dr. Klangvisai's Design Philosophy

This course was designed by Dr. Sukitti Klangvisai, a highly regarded Thai architect, known for working with the existing terrain instead of reshaping everything dramatically. The result brings a course with strategic routing and playable challenge.

He let the valley landscape dictate where the holes would be. The routing aligned with the natural contours and ridgelines. Elevation changes are gradual providing a comfortable rhythm to walk while maintaining strategic interest.

Bunkering is used sparingly but strategically — creating options to attack specific lines while controlling the ideal approach angles and defending their space to not catch a bad shot. Water features are designed naturally to blend with the course and are visually appealing while affecting player strategy. The course definitely favors more strategy and shot placement over drive distance.

Course management and shot placement are prioritized over raw distance with water and bunker placement designed to force players to make choices and weigh risk on all holes.

Pondering shot placement and weighing risk are all part of excellent course design and is a large contributor to a strong score. The design of the course and the placement of the holes restricts the ability to simply overpower the course, creating a reasonable challenge that requires more strategy.

Your first shot has to be calculated to allow your next approach shot to be less strategic.

The management of the speed on the greens kept strategy from getting out of hand.

Given the circumstances at Palm Hills the day before, having the speeds be consistent at fairways and the slope challenges at Majestic Creek was very agreeable. Unlike Palm Hills, where they absurdly designed particular holes, at Majestic Creek the Contour and slope of the greens was clever to not punish players, but to just challenge them. It is even worse at Palm Hills.

Putting is also fair. Fairways have good putting and survival is less of an obstacle if putting and reading is executed and there is enough survival to keep the flow of the greens. That's the level it should be at, and it actually

is.

Conditioning is also at fault, but I'll elaborate on that later.

First is the simple truth. Time and resources have obviously run short on the course as well as the resort. Fairways, as an example, when I played, were extemely brown and rigid, the conditioning of the bunkers was inconsistent, and competitiveness is out of the question when compared to the higher level venues at Hua Hin.

In their conditions, it is almost laughable to call themselves a premier resort. The landscape is pleasant and natural, but the level of infastructure and maintenance is clearly not a premium but budget.

However, the course itself tolerable. I find the conditions firm and the strategic elements they introduce are unlike softer elements of the layout.

It actually gives the course an authentic, engaging and rustic charm.

Don't expect resort perfection and tournament conditions as you will be disappointed.

What Makes Majestic Creek Special

Majestic Creek has an amazing location. They are able to escape urban areas that become too busy/resort like. They keep it meditative and tranquil. There are wide open views that are not obstructed by buildings, which gives you the space to breathe. You listen to birds and not cars driving by. As well, you are able to take your time with the rounds as nobody is rushing you. If you are used to resort style courses that become too busy, Majestic Creek gives you the authentic experience.

Who Is This Course For

Majestic Creek is for golfers who want low-maintenance. If you want to experience authentic Thai golf, this is the place to be. If you are looking for a course that has a well-defined strategy and what is best in a course, this is for you. If you are looking for a course with great presentation and everything new, you will not get that here. If you are looking for new things and an escape, Majestic Creek is for you.

Final Take

Majestic Creek provides thoughtful, picturesque, strategically stimulating golfing in a quiet valley environment. Although the course clearly suffers from a lack of resources and upkeep, the routing, design, and ambience come together to create an experience to remember.

It isn’t luxury resort golf, and describing it as “premier” is a stretch, but what it is honest rural Thai golf with decent quality, good views, and strategic golf.

It is an honest experience so make sure to set your expectations. It is rustic and the golf is the focus, so in your golfing experience, maintain your standards as you will need to in order to enjoy the round of golf. It is with these things in mind, that Majestic Creek is truly a worthwhile experience in relation to a Hua Hin golf trip. It is different from the rest and offers a different value. Play it early in your trip before the championship courses spoil you.
