Aphrodite Hills: The only TRUE Championship Golf Course in Cyprus
Having played most golf courses in Cyprus, I can say that the only course that truly plays at a championship level is Aphrodite Hills. Everything else is just nice resort golf. This is different.
Located high above the Mediterranean, near Paphos, the course is rugged with deep ravines, high plateaus, and continual changing winds. Visually and strategically, the course is engaging, and will keep your attention throughout the entire round.
Many resort courses in Cyprus are nice to play, but in overall experience and architectural design, routing, and playability, Aphrodite Hills is the best. Accomplished players can be challenged, but the course is enjoyable for players of all levels. What is even more important, is the course rewards high-level thinking and smart golf rather than just power.
A Good First Impression
As you drive up to Aphrodite Hills, you can experience a gradual shifting of the landscape. The road climbs up through open countryside, olive groves and rocky terrain. The terrain opens out to a large plateau that looks out over the Mediterranean and the resort can be seen. It is high expectations.
Prior to your first tee time, take a moment to appreciate the marquee view from the clubhouse terrace. From here, one can gain an appreciation for the scale of the layout. Verdant fairways, the harshness of deep ravines, commanding the routing, all set against a never-ending Mediterranean backdrop. It is the perfect mix of anticipation and calm, a mix that is characteristic of an Aphrodite Hills experience.
What struck me was how seamlessly the course has integrated itself with the surrounding area. It is a pleasure to experience a layout where everything feels natural and is clearly the product of a thoughtful design as opposed to an unyielding set of design standards. The design uses natural features like hills, valleys, and rocks to create a unique strategy and visually stimulating design elements.
Cabell B. Robinson was an associate of Robert Trent Jones Sr, therefore, Robinson’s Mature Design Approach is very apparent when looking at Aphrodite Hills.
When teeing off, you will see a wide fairway that encourages players to swing freely. As you play on, you will experience the true complexity of the course when you get to the pins, the contours of the green, and the strategically placed hazards around the green. The design will likely make you think or make you play a different shot than you are expecting.
Design features like wind flow, layout, and consistently changing course orientation will affect the consistency of your play. The random placement of each hole, particularly when combined with the many changes in elevation, will create a challenge to your ability to control the distance of your shots. The environment out on the course will create an uncontrollable area at the edge of your control to create and manipulate your rough alignment.
The Natural Canyon is the Architect's Canvas
Clearly the most dominant feature of the site is a natural canyon that divides the property into two plateaus. Instead of seeing the canyon as a barrier, Robinson embraced it as a natural feature to be incorporated into his design strategy.
Numerous holes involve a carry over the canyon, while others play right to the edge of the canyon. This design creates a unique sense of risk and reward, and focuses the player’s strategical thought process while trying to capture the most unique moments of the round.
Opening Holes Provide a Gentle Introduction
The player is able to get into the groove of the round on the first nine holes. There’s ample opportunity to hit the fairway and the greens introduce the subtle slopes and run offs that define the short game challenge.
While most of the elevation changes and interesting features of the landscape become more pronounced as the player progresses through the round.
As the landscape opens up, the player can see the scale of the golf course, building anticipation towards the 7th hole, which fully uncovers Aphrodite Hills’ golf course dramatic personality.
The 7th Hole is a Canyon Crossing Experience
The 7th hole is a dramatic par 3, and is one of the most stunning holes in Aphrodite Hills. The player is required to play the hole from an elevated and exposed tee and the shot crosses a huge canyon which drops steeply to the fairway.
With a green that is set against rugged terrain and the distant sea, it can be very difficult to judge distance because of the extreme drop, and to further complicate club selection on the day that I played it there was very swirling wind in the canyon. This shot is very complex and made more difficult by the size of the canyon. The hole tests your patience. It is designed to be a long term commitment. It punishes any shortsightedness.
Most par 3 holes lack one of the following: beauty, intimidation, or strategic planning. However, this hole features all three and will be a lasting memory.
Time for the Home Stretch
The back 9 is the serious 9. While the front 9 builds character, the back 9 instills a sense of champions.
Some of the holes are near the edges of the plateaus giving the people playing the course unobstructed views of the Mediterranean. While others dip into the valleys only to make a steep climb up to the greens.
The wind is a significant factor and tends to change hole from hole at random. The wind, along with shot shaping, and control of the shot are all very important. Enough space must be left at the beginning of the hole to make the rest of the hole challenging.
The holes that cross canyons allow for more options but the short aggressive lines require total commitment to the chosen option.
The remaining holes are designed to test your focus and willpower. There is no repetition. The gaps in each hole are distinctly different providing a unique strategic question. This is the part of the course that provides the greatest contrast to most resort courses. It provides the level of strategic thinking that is found on premier tournament courses.
The Green is a Test of Technique
The greens were designed using just the right amount of restraint and intelligence. It lacks dramatic slopes and tiers. However, the subtle shifts can be rewarding to the pockets and the risk takers that come in with a confident put. Recovery shots can quickly become complex so positioning on the right side is important.
Missed greens require thought — whether using a low running chip, a lofted pitch, or some other imaginative recovery shot. Spin control and trajectory mastery are needed when the conditions are particularly firm.
Well thought out and planned play are what win the game. Power means very little. Consistent good play is rewarded.
Conditioning Exceeded Expectations
Conditioning, during my round, is the best of the many I've seen. Smooth, true, and firm greens, combined with predictable bounce, and clean lies, make for excellent and consistent fairway, and expertly and strategically defined bunkers.
Cyprus’s dry climate puts the turf quality above and beyond during the round. Overall, the condition provides consistency with PGA National standards and it reinforces Aphrodite Hills' status as the premier golf destination on the island.
The Extras Are Well Done
The extensive and quality design of the practice facility was appreciated. The driving range was good for a full warm-up, as well as the large greens and short-game areas.
An additional good feature is the six-hole PGA Nation Academy Course. It provides a good relaxed evening golf and practice setting.
The clubhouse is a calm and very good end to the round. It is set over the course and Mediterranean terrace which encourages reflection as the light shifts and the view tightens over the ravines. It is the calm center to absorb what is the full rounded experience.
Tested From The First Tee Under Tournament Conditions
Aphrodite Hills' credentials were firmly established when it became the host venue of two European Tour events in the year 2020, the Cyprus Open and the Cyprus Showdown. The course proved to be challenging but fair. Conditions included wind and firm greens, as well as strategic routing which proved the great separating the professional playing field. Watching the professional competition here only shows how the course design proves the intelligence of the course design. The course offers no easy answers and tests adaptability, discipline, and execution.
What Makes Aphrodite Hills Stand Apart
After playing Aphrodite Hills, it is clear that it is the only true championship golf course in Cyprus. The great natural terrain and thoughtful course design make the course stand apart from the usual resort courses in condition, and it provides an experience that is more than average.
It is a course that provides strategy, patience, and imagination.
Aphrodite Hills is not only the highlight of golf in Cyprus, but the only true championship course on the island, as everything else is resort golf.
